The “4504 Message Not Found” error is a low-level SMS/MMS failure code that typically appears on Android devices, most frequently reported by Samsung users. It indicates a failure to successfully send or receive a message, often due to a local app conflict or, more commonly, an issue with the carrier connection or network configuration.

This professional guide provides the most effective, safest, and up-to-date methods for resolving this issue on modern Android OS (12+).

    Troubleshooting Steps (Easiest First)

Method 1: Perform a Force Restart (Modern “Hard Reboot”)

Since modern Android phones use non-removable batteries, the safe equivalent of a “hard reboot” is a forced restart. This clears residual memory conflicts without risking hardware damage.

    1. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously.
    2. Hold them for about 7 to 10 seconds.
    3. The device will power off and automatically restart.
    4. Once the phone reboots, test sending and receiving messages.

Method 2: Clear Messaging App Cache and Storage

Corrupt app data or cache for your default messaging application (Google Messages or Samsung Messages) is a frequent cause of communication errors. Clearing the cache is safe; clearing storage will reset your app settings but will not delete your actual message history.

    1. Go to Settings on your Android device.
    2. Navigate to Apps (or Applications).
    3. Find your default messaging app (e.g., Messages or Samsung Messages).
    4. Select Storage.
    5. First, tap Clear Cache.
    6. If the error persists, return and tap Clear Storage (or Clear Data). You will need to confirm the default SMS status afterward.
    7. Restart your device.

Method 3: Reset Network Settings (Crucial for Carrier Errors)

Because the “4504” error is frequently tied to carrier communication failures (APN conflicts, IP settings), resetting your phone’s network configuration is often the most effective fix. Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords and paired Bluetooth devices.

    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Search for Reset or navigate to General management (Samsung) or System (Google/Stock Android).
    3. Select Reset or Reset options.
    4. Tap Reset network settings (or Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth).
    5. Confirm the reset and enter your PIN/password if prompted.
    6. Restart your phone and test the messaging.

Method 4: Re-seat the SIM Card

A dirty or poorly seated SIM card can cause intermittent connectivity problems, leading to failure codes during transmission.

    1. Power down your phone completely.
    2. Use the proper SIM ejection tool to open the SIM tray.
    3. Carefully remove the SIM card.
    4. Wipe the gold contacts on the SIM card with a clean, dry, soft cloth (do not use solvents).
    5. Re-insert the SIM card securely into the tray.
    6. Close the tray and power the phone back on.

Method 5: Check and Disable the Spam Filter

While rarely the cause, certain spam blocking features can interfere with message delivery.

    1. Open your default messaging app (e.g., Messages).
    2. Tap the three-dot menu (or your profile icon) to go to Settings.
    3. Look for options like Spam protection, Blocked numbers, or Number blocking.
    4. Ensure that Block unknown senders or similar global blocking features are disabled.

    Method 6: Factory Data Reset

This is the nuclear option that should only be performed after backing up all essential data. A factory reset wipes the phone clean and restores all settings to their original state, eliminating all conflicts.

    1. Backup All Data: Use Samsung Cloud, Google Drive, or an external hard drive to secure photos, contacts, and application data.
    2. Go to Settings.
    3. Navigate to General management (Samsung) or System (Google/Stock Android).
    4. Select Reset or Reset options.
    5. Tap Factory data reset (or Erase all data (factory reset)).
    6. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm and start the process.

If the error persists after a factory reset, the problem is highly likely related to your cellular carrier or a hardware fault with the phone’s modem, and you should contact your mobile service provider for further assistance.
