There are a lot of excellent photo editor tools for your Windows PC. While names like Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop are powerful, sometimes a simpler tool provides the best results. Thus, you must know how to Outline Text Using Paint.NET.

Paint.NET is a free, powerful image editor for Windows that utilizes Microsoft’s .NET framework (which it typically installs automatically). It’s a great example of an effective, simple alternative to expensive “professional” photo editors.

Existing Paint.NET users know that plugins like BoltBait’s Plugin Pack offer a single, easy step (e.g., Effects > Object > Outline Object) to create outlined text. However, if you prefer not to download extra files and want to achieve the effect using only the default tools, here is the quick, 7-step manual method.

How to Outline Text Using Paint.NET (7 Easy Steps)

The following steps utilize layers, selections, and the built-in Outline effect to create a clean text outline without any extra plugins.

    Step 1: Create Your Text

    text

Use the Text Tool (the icon with the letter ‘A’). It’s best to use a large font size, such as 58 or 72, as this makes the later selection process easier and produces better results. The color of this text will be the final color of the center of your letters (if you choose to keep the center filled).

Step 2: Select the Text Area

Switch to the Magic Wand Tool (S). In the top-left toolbar, ensure the ‘Add (Union)’ option is selected. Click inside each letter to select the entire body of text on your canvas. This allows you to select all letters simultaneously.

Step 3: Add a New Layer

    add new layer

In the bottom-right Layers palette, click the Add New Layer button. This adds a new, blank, transparent layer on top of your text layer. The selection from the previous step should remain active.

Step 4: Fill for the Outline Color

Select the Paintbrush option or the Paint Bucket Tool. Choose the color you want for your text outline by setting it as the Primary Color in the Colors window. With the text selection still active, fill the selected area on the new layer (Layer 2) with the outline color.

Step 5: Apply the Outline Effect

With the selection still active on the new layer, go to the Effects menu and select Stylize > Outline.

    • Move the Intensity slider to the maximum (100) to solidify your outlines.
    • Adjust the Thickness slider to control how thick you want the outline to be.
    • Click OK. This expands the solid colored shape on the new layer, creating your outline.

    Step 6: Clear the Center

This is the final cleanup step.

    • Use the Magic Wand Tool again.
    • Select the transparent area inside the letters (the parts that should be empty, like the center of the ‘O’ or ‘D’).
    • Press the Delete key to clear out the center of the text on the outline layer, leaving only the outline intact.

    Step 7: Save Your Work

You have created your outlined text! You can now merge your layers (Image > Flatten) or keep them separate for future editing. Save your masterpiece either by pressing Ctrl+S or by selecting File > Save from the menu.

    FAQs

    Is Paint.NET a 3D tool?
