Alt + F4
You can shut down Windows 10 simply by pressing the Alt+F4 key on your keyboard. It is the easiest way to shut down any Windows PC.
Alt+F4 is also used to close any program, so you have to sure that all the other programs are closed so that you get directly the shut down dialogue box.
Te dialogue box contains a drop-down list that contains all the other options like if you want to restart your computer, switch among users, etc.
And in case you haven’t closed the running applications or programs, there is nothing to worry about; because in the shut down process, it will close all the running applications and then switch off the device.
The most common way to shut down Windows 10 or any other version of the OS is to shut down using the Start Menu.
You can either click on the Start Menu or simply press the Windows button on your keyboard, followed by a click on the Shut down button. You can also Restart, Switch among users, Log off, etc. using this process.
Alternatively, you can also go to the power button by pressing the Windows+X keys on your keyboard. Or by long-press-Right Click of your mouse on the Windows icon. That you will find on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Using Command to Shut down Windows 10
If you are someone who prefers using commands over keys or shortcuts. Then you can use the command shutdown /s to shut down your Windows 10 PC. You can use this command on Command Prompt, PowerShell or from the Run window.
- To open Command Prompt, click on Start>>Command Prompt or type Command Prompt on the search box.
- To open Windows PowerShell, type in the search box to find it.
- And, to open the Run window, press Windows+R keys on your keyboard.
After you open either of the Command Line Interfaces, type the command as mentioned above and press Enter on your keyboard. It will show a pop-up window that says that your computer will get turn off your system within a minute.
Shut down Windows 10 from the Lock Screen
If you lock your device or logging into Window 10, then you get the Lock Screen. There you will be able to see a Power Button.
Click on it and it will give you the option to either Shut down your PC or restart your device. And additionally, you can also make your device sleep using this Power button.
Using the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys
- Press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys on your keyboard all at the same time.

Using the Slide-to-shutdown command
Similar to method 4, you can again use another command on your Command Prompt, PowerShell or Run window to shut down Windows 10 PC.
This time you have to type a different command. slidetoshutdown and press Enter on Command Prompt and PowerShell or Click OK if on Run window.
It will take you to a Lock screen image where you will have to pull the image down using a mouse, touch pad or touch-screen to shut down the computer. And, if you want to cancel it, pull the image upward.
Use the physical Power Button on your device
Though it’s not a very good practice to directly switch off or shut down your device directly by pressing the physical Power Button. At times you can use it to shut down Windows 10.
Note: – You must have a habit of using the keys mentioned above or commands as much as possible. Do not involve yourself in shutting down your computer directly by pressing the physical power button. In case your device stops responding then you can use the power button of the device.
